It was 64 degrees out this afternoon which is pretty much perfect park weather!
A couple months ago I asked some fellow moms I know if they’d be interested in starting a “mom’s group”. My idea was that we could get together once a month, with or without the babies, and do something fun! Luckily for me, they were all interested and excited! Our first get-together was at a fun Asian restaurant downtown and this past Saturday we headed back downtown again to Candlefish to take a candle making class.
Since I don’t get to go out downtown on the weekends very much, it felt good to dress up a little!
The class is BYO-bottles of wine so that automatically makes it fun! The first step is to pick your essential oil blend from their huge library. I generally lean towards more spa-like scents so the one I chose was a blend of rosemary and lavender. They walk you through the whole process of measuring out your wax, putting the labels on, getting the wick in the vessel – they made it easy! And we got to drink wine and eat cheese while we did it!
After yesterday’s post you made be wondering how Chance is doing. Well I am here to report that he is JUST FINE. Actually he might even be better now that he’s the only dog! We’ve let him become basically an indoor dog and he gets to sit in the corner chair and be tucked into a blanket which is pretty much his favorite thing in the world.
Life is pretty good in Chance’s world!
Blech. I’ve been dreading writing this post for a couple weeks now because it’s really sad but I don’t want you to feel sad for us. A couple weeks ago we made the very hard decision to put Sam down. It wasn’t one event that caused us to make this decision but the culmination of three years of owning a very very scared dog. Sam’s level of extreme fearfulness resulted in defensiveness and aggressiveness that made him unpredictable around strangers.
We called him Sammy Sweetheart because he was nothing but sweet to our family. He loved us and loved our baby. And he loved Chance! But he was just a ticking time bomb with other people. After trying two different dog trainers, and a lot of “second chances”, we just realized this was something we had to do. It would have been irresponsible not to. We just did not feel comfortable rehoming him to another family. He would have been terrified and it could have been a dangerous situation.
We really truly loved our boy so much and we were devastated that it came to this. On Sam’s last day, Ryan was able to take him to the beach to run and play before the vet came. It was a sweet send off for a honestly sweet dog.
As this blog serves as a virtual diary for me, I want to remember Sam as the cute, funny, lovable, loyal dog that he was.
My blog posting skills have been a little lackluster lately. I have a lot of things to talk about but the motivation just hasn’t been there! But guess what, it’s back. I saw this post topic on another blog (Iowa Girl Eats) and thought it might be kind of fun to do. So here we go!
Time and place: 3:07pm at my desk
Cooking: I made a quick, delish take on a caprese salad for myself for lunch today. Cherry tomatoes that I roasted in the oven, fresh mozzarella pearls, basil, croutons, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Awaiting: Emmett’s first birthday party! We decided to combine his first birthday party with the Super Bowl to have an even bigger reason to celebrate. We’re even roasting a pig! It’s been fun planning and getting excited for a fun party with Emmett’s little friends and our friends and neighbors.
Experiencing: So much pride in all of my baby’s recent developments! He’s walking unprovoked (ie: on his own, without us trying to coerce him into doing it), clapping, playing peekaboo, waving, dancing and giggling his little head off. I am so proud of him!
Working On: A new business venture! Stay tuned.
Reading: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. This book is 4 days overdue, but I can’t get myself to return it yet because I’m not done and I’m really enjoying it! A new perspective on WWII from the viewpoint of two sisters in France. So far, I recommend it!
Listening: My guilty pleasures are probably the pop culture podcasts I listen to every week! My current favorites are Straight Talk with Ross, Juicy Scoop with Heather McDonald, and Heather Dubrow’s World. Only search for these if you like pop culture/realty tv. If you don’t, these probably won’t be for you, haha.
Craving: I made these M&M cookies last week, and now that they are all gone, I am really missing them.
Hating: Not to be annoying, but I can’t really think of much I’m hating right now. Maybe the republican candidates? 🙂
Loving: The notes Emmett gets from school. Singing?? Be still my heart.
Anticipating: Double date night with our neighbors tonight! Thanks Auntie Becca for babysitting so we can go bowling!
Watching: I am privately watching The Bachelor and publicly watching (aka with Ryan) our favorite show Shameless which is back on! I have to watch The Bachelor alone, when Ryan’s not home, because he thinks it’s the stupidest, most disgusting thing on tv. I of course disagree!
Promoting: My favorite food blogs that I check every day (sorry if I’ve already told you this): Skinnytaste, Iowa Girl Eats, and Gimme Some Oven. Pioneer Woman, Averie Cooks and Damn Delicious are also some of my go-tos when I’m trying to figure out what we’re going to eat for the week!
Avoiding: Carbs. Just kidding. That never actually happens.
Is anyone else crying because my baby is almost a year old? No? Just me? Well I’ll do enough crying for all of us then. Seriously, when did this infant turn into a little man?
At 11 months old, Emmett is awesome at keeping his balance and will even take a few unassisted steps toward you. Today I’d say he took like 5! Speaking of 5, he’s currently getting his 5th tooth and tries to bite you when he’s tired (it’s kind of weird and scary! Haha). He loves eating all sorts of foods and has discovered a love of orange slices!
He still prefers his formula out of a bottle so if anyone has any tips with how to transition him out of that next month and focus on solid foods I’ll take all of the advice I can get!
Emmett loves to babble (mostly dadadada) and is really starting to wave and dance to music. He’s also getting pretty vocal about what he doesn’t like. In particular, he hates getting his diaper changed and fights me on it every chance he gets.
He is such a speedy crawler and he loves to be chased around the house which usually results with him in our bathroom! I have no idea why he loves it in there but it’s his go-to hiding spot.
Oh my sweet, funny Emmett – I am so proud to be your mama! Even though I’m a little sad that you aren’t a tiny baby anymore, I love to watch you grow up.
If you need a feel-good documentary to watch this weekend like I did tonight, please watch Gotta Dance. It’s about the dance team made up of seniors who performed for the New Jersey Nets a couple years ago. I smiled through the whole thing!
Happy 2016! Did you wake up yesterday and look at all your Christmas decorations and think to yourself “I need this crap put away!” like I did? It’s funny how much I enjoy putting up my decorations but the second the holidays are over, I want my house back to normal stat. So that’s what I did yesterday and today in between watching Making a Murderer on Netflix (OMG, have you seen it?? So good!!) Now my house is back to normal and I can relax a little. Ahhhhh……
We spent an easy New Years Eve across the street at our neighbors’ house. I love a party where you can walk home whenever you want! Ryan and Emmett dressed up like Father Time and New Years Baby.
Chance spent his night cowarding in the house because he was terrified of the fireworks going off throughout our neighborhood.
I always get nostalgic on New Years Eve thinking about the year past and getting excited about the year ahead. Here are my resolutions for 2016:
1. No looking at my phone once I’m in bed. It keeps me up later and sometimes keeps me from falling back asleep if I wake up in the middle of the night. This is going to help me get back into reading too!
2. Keep portion control in mind when cooking and eating. No need to make a whole pan of enchiladas for just Ryan and I – either we end up eating too much or it gets thrown away. And it’s easy to just half a recipe!
3. As always, be more mindful with my eating and exercising.
What are your resolutions for 2016?
